When should I change my address before moving?
Arrange mail forwarding and update important accounts before your move.
Arrange forwarding in advance
Submit your change of address through USPS and allow processing time. USPS advises that an approved request generally takes 7–10 business days to take effect. Choose permanent or temporary forwarding according to your circumstances and confirm current terms with USPS.
Notify important senders directly
Mail forwarding does not update every organization’s records. Notify banks, insurers, government agencies, employers, subscriptions and other important senders directly. Some mail may not be forwarded, so use forwarding as a backup rather than your only address-update step.
